Notting Hill (1999)

[I really hate to do this, but I took the liberty - since it is my blog - of bumping up Notting Hill's rating to 6.5 stars out of 10. N.H. isn't a great movie, but I might have been overly harsh when I reviewed it]

Synopsis: Rich, famous and beautiful alpha females just LOVE meek, apologetic and non-threatening beta males, Example #...um...1.

Blurb From the VHS Jacket: “Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is the world’s most famous movie star. Her picture has been plastered on the cover of every magazine, and every time she makes  a move, the entire world knows about it. William Thacker (Hugh Grant) owns a travel bookstore in the quaint neighbourhood of Notting Hill. His business is stagnant, he has the roommate from hell and his love life is nonexistent.”

What Did I Learn?: see “Synopsis”.

Really?: See “Synopsis”.

Rating: Notting Hill is an semi-enjoyable little rom-com (I watched it by myself...that’s depressing) which is comparable in some respects to High Fidelity and Peter’s Friends. Notting Hill offers a few laughs (Rhys Ifans is great as William’s slobby Welsh roommate), but it’s a tad predictable, the music is awful, and I kept thinking to myself:  “this would never happen in real life", especially when Anna goes ga-ga for William when he’s in full sputtering /apology mode. 6.5/10 stars.
